How To Set Up Your Own Buy Nothing Group

Welcome to the Buy Nothing Community!

Want a Buy Nothing group in your own neighborhood? Here’s how to make it happen:

  1. Let us know that you would like to set up a group by sending us an email here.  We’ll set up a Facebook Group for your neighborhood – Since you know your region better than we do, think about what makes sort of an area makes sense as a single group; you’ll want an area large enough to gather a critical mass of members, but not so large geographically that it will be difficult for members to connect in person to share things.
  2. Your group will need one or two volunteer administrators. Group admins are responsible for answering questions and helping to keep the Buy Nothing culture developing in a kind way. If you can’t volunteer as the local administrator of your new local Buy Nothing group, recruit a friend who can!  From here on out, the directions will assume that you are going to be one of these administrators.
  3. If you don’t already have a Facebook account, you’ll need to create one. Buy Nothing Project groups connect online through Facebook group pages, so each Buy Nothing member needs a Facebook account.
  4. We’ll notify you when we’ve set up your group and will invite you to join, then upgrade you to administrator status. We’ll co-admin with you to help things run smoothly, answer questions, and share tips from other groups around the world.
  5. Invite your local friends to the new group, and ask each of them to invite their friends, and so on and so forth.
  6. Start posting! Groups need to see examples of every sort of interaction that Buy Nothing fosters: Things being given freely, things being ask for freely, items up for loan and sharing. The more there is to scroll through, the easier it is for new members to see how things work, and the more inspired everyone will be to add their own things to the mix.
  7. It’s that simple!

  31. Hi Debbie, Thanks for your interest! If you’ve checked the list https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ and there isn’t a group for your community, please feel free to send us an email directly with information about where you reside, so you can take a look at the details for starting a group in your area.

The email address is thebuynothingproject [at] gmail [dot] come. At the moment — just so you know what to expect — we’re all volunteers, many with families and jobs, and there has recently been a huge influx of new-group requests. Thanks in advance for your patience!

  32. Hi Christa, Thank you for your messages regarding starting a new Buy Nothing group for your community! 34. Hi Robin, Thanks for your interest! If you’ve checked the list https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ and there isn’t a group for your community, we’d love to have a group in your neighborhood!
To start a group in your neighborhood (or learn more about what would be involved in doing sohttps://buynothingproject.org/start-a-group/ ), the next step is to follow up with a Development admin. You will need to work together to define a manageable area. (A map you can both access may be helpful in this process.) Please feel free to send us an email directly with information about where you reside, so you can take a look at the details for starting a group in your area.

  35. Ok! Let’s get this started! I’m in Buckley, WA. Don’t know if there’s a group up here, but would love to start one. Already have this community spirit going: hauled horse manure from my neighbor across the street for the garden. Total labor of love, dug up 150 sf of old grass/sod, planting tomorrow!!! Will offer neighbor kids weeding jobs for a little spend-o over the summer and they get to understand (and reap the rewards of) a home garden! Yay!

  36. Good news! We have a group in Buckley already! Here’s the link to that group:

Just click on the link and submit a request to join your local group! Have a wonderful weekend!

  37. Hello again! I just commented on another page of yours but now I think that maybe I should have commented on this page. Lol! I searched your list of Buy Nothings in Pennsylvania and I am unable to find one super close to my location, 15317. I am from Canonsburg but I believe that surrounding communities like Washington and Peter’s Twp would also benefit from a page here in Canonsburg. This assumption is based on several yardsale pages that I am also a member of on Facebook. This project is AMAZING!! I must be a part of it!!

  39. Hi, good evening. I just got back from a trip from my hometown in San Diego and learned about this movement. I love the idea of finding new homes for seasoned items or sharing skills and skill sets to those up for growing together whIle learning about your neighbors. I searched my area and don’t have a group. I live at the San Francisco/Daly City border. My immediate neighborhood has a slight identity crisis, because of its geography. I have no problem being considered Daly City, since it literally begins 1 street behind me or San Francisco/outer Mission since it is my zip code. I look forward to hearing from you.

I like to consider myself going through a transitional downsizing, I moved from a big house in Southern California to a cozy one here. It’s been 6 years and I am finally ready to commit to the downsize. I also am a crafter and avid reader, the idea of taking this opportunity to grow my social circle would be awesome. Any ideas or suggestions youay have, I would greatly appreciate. Thank you in advance. -Jenny Caballero

Hello, I’d like to start a group in my area but can’t seem to wrap my head around which size is the magical “right” size group. Know what I mean? I live in a pretty densely populated area, is my zipcode too large? small? Ack! Help please. HH.
