Mission & Principles

BNP generic 2015

Our Buy Nothing Project Mission:

We offer people a way to give and receive, share, lend, and express gratitude through a worldwide network of hyper-local gift economies in which the true wealth is the web of connections formed between people who are real-life neighbors.

 Principles:

  • We believe our hyper-local groups strengthen the social fabric of their communities, and ensure the health and vitality of each member.
  • We come from a place of abundance ~ not scarcity.
  • We believe in abundance, we give, we ask, we share, we lend and we express gratitude.
  • We are a gift economy, not a charity. We see no difference between want and need, waste and treasure.
  • We measure wealth by the personal connections made and trust between people.
  • We value people and their stories and narratives above the ‘stuff.’
  • We are inclusive and civil at our core.
  • We value honesty and integrity in all our interactions.
  • We view all gifts as equal; the human connection is the value.
  • We believe every community has the same wealth of generosity and abundance.

Join Us:
Buy Nothing: Give Freely. Share creatively. Post anything you’d like to give away, lend, or share among neighbors. Ask for anything you’d like to receive for free or borrow. Keep it legal. Keep it civil. No buying or selling, no trades or bartering, no soliciting for cash. We’re an adult-only, hyper-local gift economy. We are not a charity or community bulletin board.

By joining a Buy Nothing Project group, you agree to abide by our Mission and Rules.

You can join one group only, the group where you live so you can literally “give where you live.” This is what builds community.

  1. Hello! I recently read about the Buy Nothing Project on Facebook and it brought a tear to my eye. I would so love to be a part of this in my community. I looked up groups in my area and saw that there is a group in Apex, NC. I tried to join, but there is a note on the page that says I have to contact a specific person in order to join. Unfortunately, that link is broken and I cannot see who I am supposed to contact. Is there any way I could get assistance from here on how to join? Thank you so much and I look forward to hearing back!!

  2. Is there a minimum age to join a Buy Nothing group?

    • Hi Laura, yes the minimum age is 21. Thanks for asking!

    • Hi Laurie – I want to add on to that answer! We have Buy Nothing Project groups in a growing number of countries and territories. All of our groups around the world are open to adults, but the definition of “adult” varies from country to country. We use each country’s most conservative age of legal majority as the Buy Nothing Project definition of “adult” for our groups in that country. So, for the United States, we use the age of 21, since that’s the age at which the final adult rights are given to citizens; other countries have other ages. If you’re asking about our membership age for a country other than the United States, please let me know – I’d be happy to get that information for you.

  4. I agree with these terms. Great community building idea.

  5. Is there a size at which a group is “split”? Thanks – we love our BN community!

    • Hello! In Buy Nothing, we don’t have a specific size for when a group decides to “split” – or what we call “sprout.” (We figure it’s like a tree or plant and when the tree or plant grow large, a new sprout forms an off-shoot of the original.) However, the intent was to always keep the groups small and more easily able to connect to one another. Oftentimes, the sprout begins to happen when groups become larger than 900 members. But, just as the tree or plant, it completely depends on what is being grown and how things are going as to when a sprout will occur. Thank you for your interest in our social experiment!

  6. Finally a group to bring together our ever growing community. What a beautiful concept and one I would feel privileged to be part of.

  24. How do you navigate the “join only one group” rule for people who live in two different parts of the country and split their time between those locations?

    • Hi Kate!

Thanks for your question. Members who split their time between 2 locations, are asked to choose just one, and join the group for that address. Typically it is suggested the member joins the group for the address they spend more time at. If it is evenly split, then we often suggest using your “official” address that you would use when filing taxes. In the end though, it is still one group only, with the member being able to choose.

Thanks for your interest in our social experiment!

If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group yet in your community, we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are. We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers).

If you’re interested in becoming an Admin, please fill out the form you will find on the page in the following link. Once you have done so, the Development Admin for your area will contact you. Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you they will respond.
