Find a Group

logo-square-lg

We are thrilled for you to join us in this amazing experiment. Just find your community in the list below, and click. The embedded link will take you directly to Facebook, where you can request to join your local group by clicking on ‘Join Group’.

Once you have selected “Join Group”, Facebook will present you with 3 questions to answer. Please answer all three questions so that an admin can approve your request.
If you are unable to view these questions, or you have any other questions or concerns, feel free to send a message to the volunteer named in the Group Description to verify your eligibility to join the group.

Remember: You can join only one Buy Nothing Project group, the group where you live so you can literally “give where you live.” This is what builds community. Please request to join only one group. If it is the wrong one for your location, an admin will assist you in finding the right group.

If there’s no Buy Nothing group in your home community and you’re willing to be a local admin for the group, click here to learn how to start your own Buy Nothing Project group.

  1. Hi, Sandra! If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group yet in your community (check this list which is updated frequently https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ ), we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are. We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers). Let us know if you’re interested – send a message to thebuynothingproject@gmail.com with your location details, and we’ll start from there!

  2. Hello! If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group yet in your community (check this list which is updated frequently https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ ), we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are. We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers).

To be an admin requires anywhere from a few minutes a day to a few hours per week – you get to choose how much energy you want to put into it. Because we are all volunteers, we find time between the rest of our busy lives to make this amazing experiment work and you would have a regional admin who can give you a hand in getting your new group started. We are all about community, so know that you would never have to go it alone! And, the wonderful thing about creating Buy Nothing on Facebook is that you don’t necessarily need a place to host anything. You give where you live with the neighbors on your street and in your community. Any events that happen are completely up to the group itself.

Let us know if you’re interested – send a message to thebuynothingproject@gmail.com with your location details, and we’ll start from there!

  26. Hello Mary, Thanks for your interest! If you’ve checked the list https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ and there isn’t a group for your community, we’d love to have a group in your neighborhood! To start a group in your neighborhood (or learn more about what would be involved in doing sohttps://buynothingproject.org/start-a-group/ ), the next step is to follow up with a Development admin. You will need to work together to define a manageable area. (A map you can both access may be helpful in this process.) Please feel free to send us an email directly with information about where you reside, so you can take a look at the details for starting a group in your area.
The email address is thebuynothingproject [at sign] gmail. At the moment — just so you know what to expect — we’re all volunteers, many with families and jobs, and there has recently been a huge influx of new-group requests. Thanks in advance for your patience!

  46. Hello. I do not have a Facebook account. I would like to join the Washington, Seattle, Lower Queen Anne.

  47. […] I have received so much wonderful stuff for free from my local Buy Nothing group. It’s an online network of hyper-local gift economies. It’s the high-tech version of going next door for a cup of sugar. Highlights include two dozen BumGenius pocket diapers, a huge pile of prefolds, half a dozen wool diaper covers of various styles, an organic infant insert for my Ergo, grab bags of baby clothes, and baby silverware (because Solids Are Coming). Not to mention a worm bin, a dress shirt that fits my husband perfectly, and a carload of landscaping rocks. One lady saw I had a baby in my profile picture, so she left behind a pack of disposable diapers and organic baby lotion when she picked up her gift. I got to re-gift the Ergo insert when Wyatt grew out of it, and I passed on a bunch of evening primrose oil capsules to a pregnant neighbor approaching her due date. I have also jettisoned tons of jewelry I’ve been hanging on to since middle school, and lots of clothes that don’t fit my postpartum body and were depressing me every time I tried them on. It’s a beautiful thing. You can find your local Buy Nothing group here. […]

  48. Hi, Candice! All of the Buy Nothing Project groups use facebook, yes … and people often ask us why we chose Facebook as our platform for The Buy Nothing Project. 1) It’s free; 2) Most of our friends and neighbors are on Facebook; and 3) It’s transparent. Transparency is the key ingredient to keeping a gift economy sustainable over time. Though there are some limitations to Facebook, the BNP is a network of groups completely run by Volunteers, without a budget (or time) to put the effort required into developing and maintaining a stand-alone site at this time.

Many people sign up for Facebook just to use Buy Nothing. If you’d like to do that, please join Facebook, then have a look at the list, and copy/paste the link for your neighborhood into your browser, which will then give you an option to ‘request to join.’ https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ Thanks for your interest in our social experiment!
