Find Your Group

We are thrilled for you to join us in this amazing experiment.

Just find your community in the list below, and click. The embedded link will take you directly to Facebook, where you can request to join your local group by clicking on ‘Join Group’. Once you have clicked on “Join Group,” Facebook will present you with 3 questions to answer. Please answer all three questions so the group’s admin can approve your request.

If you are unable to view these questions, or you have any other questions or concerns, send a message to the person named in the “About/Group Description” section of the group’s public Facebook landing page.

The Buy Nothing Project asks you to join only one Buy Nothing Project group, the group where you live, so that you can literally “give where you live.” This builds resilient community connections that see people through all of life’s challenges.

You can read the basic Buy Nothing Project rules here before joining so you’ll be ready to participate right away. Some groups may have added to or changed the basic rules to better serve their communities, so be sure to check this out when you’ve been welcomed into your local Buy Nothing Project group.

If there’s no Buy Nothing group in your home community, click here to learn how to start your own Buy Nothing Project group.

  1. Hi Karen,

The list of active Buy Nothing Project gift economies is available online here: https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ It’s updated frequently, so please check back if there’s not one near you. And if you’d like to learn more about what it takes to start one, and you might be willing to serve as a volunteer admin, send us an email and we can get you more info. Thanks for your interest!

  2. Hi Linda,

Did you find your hyper-local Buy Nothing community group? Please check this list (which is updated frequently) for the groups in Australia, and either click or copy/paste the link for your neighborhood into your browser, which will then give you an option to ‘request to join.’ https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/#Australia

Thanks for your interest in our social experiment!

  3. Hi,

I am going to be moving to an area that does not have a Buy nothing group. I had sent a request to start a group a few weeks ago, but haven’t received any reply yet. Is it still being processed or should I re-apply? Thank you.

ps. the area I am talking about is Maddington in Perth, Western Australia 6109.

  4. Hi! I want to start a group in Santiago, Chile. I filled up the form about a week ago so I wanted to know the next steps. Thanks!

  6. Hi Kejal,

Thanks for offering to be an Admin for a local Buy Nothing group to cover your area. From what I understand the Development Admin for Australia has recently sent you an email, to get the processes started.

  7. Hi Juan,

Thanks for offering to become an Admin for your area.

Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you they will respond. Currently there is a backlog of several weeks, due to the huge increase in interest; our Development Team is working diligently through the requests for new groups as quickly as they are able.

  19. What happened to the West Seattle – Gatewood / Fauntleroy group? It no longer loads? I posted a few things yesterday and tried logging in today on Facebook to contact the recipients.

  20. I joined the Norton, MA site. I posted a free crib. Someone came and got it. I was going back to the site to mark it as gone but it is showing as the page is “unavailable” like it has disappeared.

  28. Hi, i enquired a few days ago about becoming an administrator for Doncaster East in Vic, Melb and was wondering how long it may be before I expect a reply? I have checked my spam as suggested and have found nothing. I am very keen to get a group running in my area if you see fit. Please get back to me relatively soon.

    Yours
    Dru Bartlett

  29. Hi Edward,

All of the Buy Nothing Project groups use Facebook, yes … and people often ask us why we chose Facebook as our platform for The Buy Nothing Project. 1) It’s free; 2) Most of our friends and neighbors are on Facebook; and 3) It’s transparent. Transparency is the key ingredient to keeping a gift economy sustainable over time.

Though there are some limitations to Facebook, the BNP is a network of groups completely run by Volunteers, without a budget (or time) to put the effort required into developing and maintaining a stand-alone site at this time.

Thanks for your interest in the Project!

  34. Hello. I’m in Bushnell, Florida and would like to start a group here. I’ll need to open a Facebook account and can do that. Please let me know what I need to do. My local area will include the surrounding tiny cities too…Lake Panasoffkee, Sumterville, Webster, Center Hill, Nobleton….

  35. Hello so I live in Villa Park IL & I requested to join the Lombard IL group but I would love to create a Villa Park IL group where I could be the admin. I am already a admin of 3 FB groups & a moderator for another one. I have about 3k FB friends, belong to hundreds of FB groups & I have over 8K connections on LinkedIn, almost 2k followers on Twitter along with 1500 on Instagram.

I really think this could fit well with me as I hate seeing good things trashed or wasted that someone else can use. I am married with 6 kids & active in my church plus community. I also volunteer my time for church & community events. I am very social media savy & could really promote my local group, maybe even using other resources such as nextdoor, Craigslist, offer up, let go, Walla pop, 5miles, close5 plus FB market place. I would love to join the community!!

    All the best,
    Ron Schroeder.
