  1. Hi! i wanted to ask if i could give away some art. The thing is, i’m unsure if it would be allowed since my post would include what i can do. I would look almost like commissioning though i do not request any money or anything either. would that be against the rules or am i free to offer my services for free?

    • Hi Ariannae,

Thanks for your question. You are free to gift from your talent or service. This section in our Frequently Asked Questions, might help point you in the right direction on how to offer your gift. Please do not link to your business in any way.

      https://buynothingproject.org/about/faqs/#Business

It is generous of you to offer some of your talent & skill to your neighbors, in the form of a gift of art!

  2. 😦 Tried to join the group in my area because there was one… but they claimed they were “hyper-local” so even though my career is in their area and I frequent the area enough to interact with people just fine, since I live a bit outside of it, I wasn’t allowed to join. Why is this group so exclusive? Are they all like this?

    • Hi K,

Yes all of our groups are hyper-local, and members *must* live within the area covered by the group they wish to join. This is in fact not to exclude people, but to ensure we are able to include all adult members of a specific set area. Our groups are made up of neighbors who live in these set areas, neighbors who we can trust to rely on 24/7, not just when someone is passing through for frequent visits, or only during work days or hours.

This section of the FAQs touches on this topic: https://buynothingproject.org/about/faqs/#GWYL

And this link you can read our Criteria for Membership, which states our members must live in the boundaries for group they wish to join.
      https://buynothingproject.org/the-fine-print-2/

I hope this helps to clarify things. Our volunteer Admins are using their free time to ensure membership criteria are met, and all members participate in accordance to our rules.

If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group that covers where you *live* specifically (check this list which is updated frequently https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ ), we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are. We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers).

If you’re interested in becoming an Admin, please fill out the form you will find on the page in the following link. Once you have done so, the Development Admin for your area will contact you. Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you they will respond.

  3. hi, i’m from Mexico city, i want to help my community i heard about this project and i love it, i want to start my group here in the south of the city, i already sent my details but i never received an answer.
    thanks a lot

    • Hi Arlette,

Thanks for offering to become an Admin for a Buy Nothing group to cover the area in which you live. I can see your request has been received.

Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time. This time of the year is especially busy, as there is an increased number of requests, all while our Admins have less free time due to taking vacations, and other common summer activities. This may mean it can take weeks, but I assure you the Development Admin for your area will respond.

Thanks again for offering to become an Admin, it is greatly appreciated!

  4. Hi, are you looking at opening a group in the Kwinana area WA? Thanks

  5. I am trying to start a group in the Fort Gordon Georgia. I signed up and waiting for a response. What is my next step to do.

    • Hi Lyn,

Thanks for offering to become an Admin for a Buy Nothing group to cover the area in which you live. I can see your request has been received.

In the meantime, while you wait I suggest you read over the Buy Nothing Project website, to get a feel of the Project, our Rules, and the role of an Admin. I suggest starting here: https://buynothingproject.org/join-our-team/ which gives an excellent overview of the duties of Admin.

Thanks again for offering to become an Admin, it is greatly appreciated!

  6. Can’t remember where I saw this ‘movement’ advertised – probably one of the current affair programmes on tv. We have a website called Gumtree where people can buy, sell or even offer to swap goods, but it also has a “Freebies” section where people give goods away free. We also have sites like Mandurah buy, swap and sell. How is BN any different from these? Greg Mandurah Western Australia

    • Hi Greg,

Thanks for taking the time to write to the Buy Nothing Project.

Our network of hyper-local gifting economy groups may seem the same to other selling or free sites, however it is quite different. First of all the focus is not about the free stuff, but the connections made with neighbors through the gifting & sharing of the abundance found in any particular group. Our groups are also quite hyper-local. This means they cover an area usually much smaller than a region covered by sites like gumtree, or other buy/sell/free Facebook groups.

Buy Nothing groups are also quite transparent, with much of the transaction happening within the group. The items or services are offered freely as gifts, every member can see who is offering, who is responding and often the gratitude is also expressed on the same post once the items is received. Our groups build trust between members, due to the close nit aspect, and the openness we strive to achieve.

If it interests you to join a Buy Nothing group Here is the list of groups for Australia: https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/#Australia.
However as I understand things there is not currently a group covering Mandurah, but our Development team for Australia has recently received several requests for Mandurah, so it seems one will be created in the near future. Please check back, if there isn’t one just yet.

Thanks for your interest in our social experiment. If you have any further questions our FAQ section may be helpful, or you can simply reply to this message.

  7. What if someone is homeless? Can they be a part of a few groups in their area?

    • Hi Karlin,

Thanks for taking the time to ask your question. Homeless or those without a permanent location are still welcome to join our groups. However just like any other member, they still can only have membership in *one* group at at time.

You can see this topic talked about more in this section of our FAQ page here: https://buynothingproject.org/about/faqs/#GWYL

Thanks for your interest in our social experiment!

  8. Hi! I filled out the form to start a group in my area and it’s been 2-3 weeks without hearing anything. I understand the group is run by volunteers and just making sure this is a normal wait time. Thanks.

    • Hi Nicole,

Thanks for letting us know of your interest in becoming an Admin. Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you your Development Admin for your area will respond. Currently there is a backlog of several weeks, due to the huge increase in interest; our Development Team is working diligently through the requests for new groups as quickly as they are able.

Thanks for your interest in our social experiment!

  9. Hello i would like to join your Kent group. Not sure where to start.

    Thank you
    TinaMarie

    • Hi TinaMarie,

Did you find your hyper-local Buy Nothing community group? Please have a look at the list, and copy/paste the link for your neighborhood into your browser, which will then give you an option to ‘request to join.’

      https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group

Also if you have already sent a request to join, there is a chance someone has already sent you a Facebook message.

Remember to check your message folders in addition to the in-box.

  10. I tried to start a group in my area but didn’t receive a response. I then tried to sign up for the closest town to me and have not heard from anyone. I really think I just need to start one in my neighborhood.

  11. I submitted a request to start a group a week or so so ago and have not received a response

    • Hi Matt,

Thanks for coming forward and offering to volunteer as Admin for a local group to cover where you live. At this time there is a rather large backlog of requests. Please have patience as the Development Team work as efficiently as they are able to get through this backlog. This may mean it will take several weeks for someone to respond, but I assure you someone will reply!

In the meantime you might find reading over this page in our website helpful to get a better idea of what is expected of those volunteering in our Admin role.
