  1. I love this concept, have a lot to give away and hope to start a group in Kugluktuk Nunavut 🇨🇦 where I live

    • Hi Lori,

Thanks for offering your time to the Buy Nothing Project! I can confirm we’ve received your inquiry in February. Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you they will respond. Our Development Team is working diligently through the requests for new groups as quickly as they are able.

We look forward to having you join our network of local Admins & Buy Nothing groups!

  2. Hello. I am already a member but want to knowif you have a group in Southern Oregon in the Grants Pass area? Asking for a friend.

  3. Hello! I live in a small town of around 40k people in the Midwest and this sounds like a perfect opportunity for my community , however, I’m not sure I would know how to put the group together and particularly how to be sure that the groups intention is clear, understood and remains intact. I see “free stuff ” groups run off the tracks many times , with a bit of help, I’d love to help start this movement in my own area, can someone advise me?
    Many thanks

    • Hi Julie,

If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group yet in your community (check this list which is updated frequently https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/ ), we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are. We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers).

If you’re interested in becoming an Admin, please fill out the form you will find on the page in the following link. Once you have done so, the Development Admin for your area will contact you. Please have patience, this process is done in our volunteers’ free time, as such a reply may take some time, but I assure you they will respond. Our Development Team is working diligently through the requests for new groups as quickly as they are able.

  4. I heard about this group from a poster on a bulletin board in a local library, for Penfield, New York. But the group was only specific to the certain area, and didn’t include the whole Penfield zip code. I live in the zip code 14445 and I’m looking to see if there is a group or if it’s possible to start one.

    • Hi Katrina,

If there isn’t a Buy Nothing group yet in your community (check this list for all of New York https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/#NY ), we’d love to see a gift economy started where you are, if the group doesn’t cover your specific location (this is common, it is part of our hyper local Mission) We just need a local volunteer to join us as admin (our entire network is run by volunteers).

If you’re interested in becoming an Admin, please fill out the form you will find on the page in the following link. Once you have done so, the Development Admin for your area will contact you. 5. Hi. Is it true that you can only be in 1 Buy Nothing Group? If so, shouldn’t that rule also apply for admins? There is an admin in my area who is in multiple groups in my city and the surrounding area. That kinda defeats the “give where you live” idea, and looks bad as all others are only allowed 1 group, but this individual can give/take in any of these groups.

    • Hi Sally,

Thanks for your question. Yes it is true our members must be a member of and participate in just ONE group.

However, our Admins are different, because we work on a collaborative model, and our Admins join several groups for a variety of reasons. For instance our Founders are in each and every group, our Global Admins are the same, in a high percentage of our groups. We also have Regional Admins that are in every group in the Region they oversee. Additionally having new Admins observe in nearby well established groups, helps them learn ideas to implement in their own group, and allows Admins of neighboring groups to help keep an eye on each other’s groups.

Now that doesn’t mean our Admins can participate in more than one group, they can only participate in their Home Group, the one covering where they live.

If we did not allow our Admins to join multiple groups, our network would not be able to function they way it does. We ALL help each other, from the Founders to the newest Admin who joined our team today!

Thanks for your interest in our Social Experiment!

  6. Hello 🙂
    Q. Are Admits to follow the same guidelines as all members? Such as being a member of ONLY one buysellnothing group and being a member of the buysellnothing group which in the neighborhood (town) they live in?

    Thanks!

    • Hi Jayne,

      Hi Sally,

Thanks for your question. Yes our Admins must follow all the rules the same as any other member, with the exception of “one group only”.

Our Admins have that one exception because we work on a collaborative model, and our Admins join several groups for a variety of reasons. For instance our Founders are in each and every group, our Global Admins are the same, in a high percentage of our groups. We also have Regional Admins that are in every group in the Region they oversee. 7. Dear Lisl & Rebecca,

I would like to start a group in Germany in Berlin-Mitte. I just opened a Facebook Account for that. It would be great to hear from your team and be able to bring a new group here to Germany!

    Best Lala

    • Hi Lala,

  8. I didn’t see our group on the list but we are in the San Diego area (Carlsbad, CA): https://www.facebook.com/groups/1751806558454427/

    • Hi Christine,

Thanks for your message about your Buy Nothing group not being listed on our Find A Group page. That list is typically updated more frequently, however personal circumstances for our Volunteer Admin who takes care of that list, has meant it has become backlogged by several months. Additional assistance has recently been volunteered, and hopefully the list will be updated with all current active groups in the near future.

  9. Hi is there a buynothing project in South Florida?
    Liz from South Florida

  10. Hi!
Just found this group in Newtown
and would be interested in joining.
I have lived in town for 7 years. My husband and I have been married
for almost 48 years and have many
things we would love to give to a
    loving, local home.

    Thank you

  11. Hi! I live in Central district, Seattle, on 26th Avenue between Jefferson St and cherry st. There are no groups around here. My son lives in Belltown and I use his address as my mailing address. Can I join the Belltown group? Thanks!

    • Hi Valéria,

Our Hyperlocal Gift Economy groups are each set to cover a specific area. Each & every member must live within the area covered by the group they joined. We have this membership requirement standard for all groups, and each member. It is in part how we work towards building trust. All members trust us to keep to our word that the people they are interacting with live within the set area stated. There is no exception. Stating you live at your “mailing address” would begin your membership under a lie, so please do not request to join any group that does not cover where you actually live.

There is an extensive network of groups covering Seattle, and new ones started regularly. If there isn’t one covering where you live, I’m sure there will be one soon. Please just keep checking the list frequently. https://buynothingproject.org/find-a-group/#WA

  12. I am not on Facebook, but want to participate! Is there an option for this?

    • Hi Toni,

All of the Buy Nothing Project groups use Facebook, yes … and people often ask us why we chose Facebook as our platform for The Buy Nothing Project. 1) It’s free; 2) Most of our friends and neighbors are on Facebook; and 3) It’s transparent. Transparency is the key ingredient to keeping a gift economy sustainable over time.

Though there are some limitations to Facebook, the BNP is a network of groups completely run by Volunteers, without a budget (or time) to put the effort required into developing and maintaining a stand-alone site at this time.

Thanks for your interest in the Project!

  13. I live in Beaconsfield, WA, my nearest Buy Nothing group is in East Fremantle/Palmyra. Can I join that group if I don’t live in that suburb?

  14. Hi,
I was just wondering how long it take to be accepted into the group? My daughter loves her group and wanted me to join in my area.
    Thank you for you time

    • Hi Cheri,

It can take a few days to a week or so to be admitted to your local Buy Nothing group. Please be sure to answer our 3 membership questions that should have popped up when you requested to join. Also if you have already sent a request to join, there is a chance someone has already sent you a Facebook message.

Remember to check your message folders in addition to the in-box.
