Buy Nothing Project Host Agreement
This is the agreement that explains how you and the Buy Nothing Project will work together to support your Buy Nothing private community. Please read it carefully.
You are using the Buy Nothing Project's copyrighted documents and our trademarked name, and we have a shared duty to protect and maintain the integrity of this Project.
To run a worldwide movement, we need to assure all community members that they are being served by the most current, legally-compliant materials available. This agreement supports and protects community members and admins, alike.
We provide you and your community access to the most up-to-date materials that the Buy Nothing Project has to offer. When you use our materials, features, and/or name, you are licensing them from us and are party to this Buy Nothing Host Agreement. Our mutual responsibilities are detailed below.
We give you permission to use our materials and/or name to create your own Buy Nothing private community. We do not give permission for third party use of our documents and/or name. We do not give permission for third party private community set-up or creation using our documents and/or name. We do not give permission for anyone to use our materials to set up or update a private community independently. This agreement is a contract between the Buy Nothing Project and you, a volunteer host for your Buy Nothing private community.

- Here are a few things to know:
- Your Private Community is built with Buy Nothing Project foundational information.
- We have shared an introductory post & links to help start the Give, Ask, Gratitude cycle.
- If your private community is a local gift economy, we will publish your private community in our worldwide list of official registered Buy Nothing Communities, accessible for anyone to look up and find as their local community using their address via our online social groups listings tool. This resource is available for anyone to access via our Buy Nothing Project platform at https://buynothingapp.com/ (via the web) or via your mobile app store. This app is free. Please be sure to check your Buy Nothing Private Community’s listing in a few days to ensure the lat/long for the community is correct! You do this by going to your Settings page, and scroll down to “Registered Buy Nothing Communities”. There, you can input your address and viewing radius and choose to view the registered communities in map view or list view.
- We may share Buy Nothing Project news, resources, and tips with your community on a periodic basis, to keep everyone in the Buy Nothing loop.
- We will respect your leadership of the private community we set up for you, by taking no action within the community other than our own very occasional informational posting of global Buy Nothing news and tips as well as responding to the crowd-sourced reports of comments and posts. You are fully in charge of who joins the community and who is removed. If a Community Member violates our guidelines and Terms of Use on The Buy Nothing Project platform, we reserve the right to remove them from the platform.
- We will not delete any posts or comments or otherwise take on any duties of leadership, other than reporting noncompliant posts if we see them.
- We reserve the right to archive the private community if the community is no longer a gift economy, allowing market economy posts such has advertisements for local businesses or Buy/Sell/Trade types of posts
- The Buy Nothing Project will not step into group conversations, conflicts, issues, growth decisions, community membership, etc. The Buy Nothing Project will not respond to requests within the community via tagging, private message, comments, etc.
- If any illegal activity occurs in the private community, we reserve the right to pause all activity, to protect the Hosts, the members, and the Buy Nothing Project.
- Respect the informational posts we share with your community by allowing them to stay in the main community feed.
- If you remove the links to our website, which are there to support your members and are part of our copyright agreement, this agreement becomes null and void and the private community will become an archived Buy Nothing Project private community.
- We invite you to join the Buy Nothing Community Host Forum where we provide support for all Buy Nothing Project Community Hosts, worldwide.
- If there is no activity within the private community for a period of 1 month, this agreement becomes null and void and the community will become an archived Buy Nothing private community.
