How to Buy Nothing
We're a global gift economy network. What's a gift economy? An ancient system of giving, receiving, and sharing gifts of stuff and self in ways that build the best sort of wealth: resilient, joyful communities that are inclusive at their core.

Set Up Your Profile
  • Tap on "Me" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap on "Profile"
  • Tap on "Edit Profile"
  • Add a profile photo, your name, your neighborhood, and some info about yourself
  • Using your name, a photo, and information that your real life neighbors will recognize makes it much more likely that your Asks & Gives will be successful
Explore Your Home Page
  • Tap on "Home" in the lower left corner of the task bar across the bottom of your screen
  • Your Home page will show you all of the posts in your area, in chronological posting order
  • Tap the green heart icon underneath a post to "like" that post
  • Tap the green speech bubble icon under a post to comment on that post
  • To report a post for violating the BN Community Commitment or Terms of Service, tap on the 3 gray dots at the upper right corner of the post, then tap "Report Post"
Adjust Your Viewing Radius
  • Tap on "Community" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap on "change my viewing radius"
  • Tap on the distance that matches how far from your location you'd like to see posts and connect with your community
  • 20 miles is our current default setting, so you can see what's happening all around you
  • To get more local or hyper-local, tap on one of the other viewing radius choices
  • Return to this setting as often as you'd like to adjust your viewing radius
Change Your Location
Everyone can change their location and travel with the app to as many locations as you'd like!
  • Tap Community at the bottom of the screen
  • After your bolded community name, top "Change"
  • Enter your new address or community name. Find it in the options provided. Confirm it is correct via the map, then tap the green "Confirm" button at the bottom of the screen
  • Type in your new neighborhood name and tap the green 'Confirm' button at the bottom of the screen
  • Refresh your feed by swiping down on the Home screen
Everyone can also change their location via their Settings screen:
  • Tap 'Me' at the bottom of the screen
  • Tap the gear icon at the top right corner of the screen to open your settings
  • Tap 'Change my location' and follow the last 2 steps, above
Scroll Your Home Feed
  • Tap "Home" in the bottom left hand corner of your screen
  • Tap the 4 gray squares in upper right hand corner of your screen to change to grid view for faster visual scrolling
  • Tap the gray list view icon to return to the default single stream list of posts
  • Tap "Active" at the top of your screen to see only posts that are still in active status, with gifts waiting to be given or received
  • Tap "All" to see all of the posts in your viewing radius, including gifts that have already been given or received
Search
To search for an item, keywords, or for a neighbor's posts:
  • Tap on "Home" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap on the magnifying glass icon in the taskbar across the top of your screen
  • Use your device's keyboard to enter the word(s) you'd like to search for
  • Tap the magnifying glass icon on your device's keyboard to activate your search
  • Scroll through your search results, which will appear in highlighted text for you
You can also search for a neighbor on your Community screen:
  • Tap "Community" on your bottom taskbar
  • Tap the green "Find members" button
  • Input your neighbor's name in the search bar at the top of the screen
  • Your search results will be highlighted for you
Comment
  • Buy Nothing guidelines ask everyone to comment on a post to request a Give, offer to fulfill an Ask, or join in on a Gratitude
  • Comments are the best place to build community and increase giving, asking, sharing and participation in your area.
  • Tap the comment icon at the bottom of any post to add your comment
  • To respond to someone else's comment on a post, tap "Reply" underneath their comment. Your comment will be nested below theirs and they'll receive a notification
  • Comment on Gives that you'd like to receive or Asks that you'd like to fulfill; add a bit of personality to your comments for best results. You can also comment with encouragement on posts you love.
  • "Like" posts by tapping on the heart icon below them. This encourages neighbors to Give & Ask
  • There is no "first come, first served" rule in Buy Nothing, so ask kindly to be considered and check back often to see if you've been selected
Start Posting!
  • Tap the "Share +" button at the bottom center of your screen
  • Choose what you'd like to do:
  • Tap "Give" to offer an item or service
  • Tap "Ask" to request an item or service
  • Tap "Gratitude" to express your thanks for your BN neighbors and gifts
  • Tap "What..." to activate your keyboard and enter your words
  • Tap the gray camera icon in the bottom left hand to add photos to your post
  • Tap "post" to share your Give, Ask, or Gratitude with your BN community
Give a Gift
There are 2 ways to offer a BN gift:
  • Create a Give post and share it with your community. If your neighbors are interested in what you're giving away, they can comment on your post.
  • Scroll your Home feed and use the Search box to look for Ask posts that you're able to fulfill. When you find something, leave a comment to offer what your neighbor is asking for, and let them know anything important about the gift (condition, date it needs to be picked up by, etc).
  • Remember that the Giver is always, always in charge of choosing a recipient, and can make their decision however they'd like.
  • You can offer any gift of stuff or self that you'd like to give away, so long as it's legal per your local laws and also otherwise allowed by our Community Commitment and Terms of Service - You'll find these via your Settings page.
Request a Gift
There are 2 ways to request a BN gift:
  • Create an Ask post and share it with your community. If your neighbors have what you're looking for, they can comment on your post.
  • Scroll your Home feed and use the Search box to look for gifts you'd like. When you find something, leave a comment with a bit of information about yourself and ask to be considered as a recipient.
  • We've found that people get the best results when they say more than just "interested" in their comments. BN is all about building community, and the people posting here are your real-life neighbors. The more your comments have warmth and your personality, the more you'll build connections.
  • Remember that the Giver is always, always in charge of choosing a recipient, and can make their decision however they'd like.
  • You can ask for any gift of stuff or self that you'd like to receive, so long as it's legal per your local laws and also otherwise allowed by our Community Commitment and Terms of Service - You'll find these via your Settings page.
Share Your Gratitude
Gratitude is one of the key ingredients in a thriving BN community.
  • If you're happy about something you've given away, tell your story in a Gratitude post
  • If you're delighted with something you've received, tell your story in a Gratitude post
  • If you're filled with joy because of your BN neighbors, tell them all about it in a Gratitude post
Lend & Borrow
You can start your own BN Lending Library anytime you'd like!
  • Post a photo and description of anything you'd like to lend to your neighbors
  • Include "#lendinglibrary" in your description and include any rules you choose
  • Invite people to comment on your post if they'd like to be considered as a borrower, including the dates they'd like to pick up and return your loaned items
  • Popular BN Lending Library items include: Camping gear, sports equipment, mobility and accessibility devices such as crutches & wheelchairs, wedding and party supplies such as dishes, silverware, cloth napkins tablecloths & cake stands, tools for home repairs and gardening, etc.
Round Robins or Traveling Suitcases
You can start a Round Robin or Traveling Suitcase anytime you'd like:
  • Put together a collection of things you'd like to give away, packed into boxes, bags, or yes, even a suitcase
  • Post your collection as a Give and include #roundrobin and/or #traveling suitcase and a description like this: "I'm starting a Round Robin. I've put all of my size 5-8 kid clothes into some bags, and I'm ready to send this around the community. Comment below if you'd like a turn with this collection. You can take what you like, put in whatever kid clothes in the same sized you have to add, and pass everything to the next person in line. When we get to the end of the list of names, the last person can post what's left to start again, donate whatever they don't like elsewhere, or do whatever they'd like with the collection"
  • Popular collections include kitchen gear, spices, clothing in specific size ranges, puzzles, board games, arts and crafts supplies, bedding, throw pillows, etc.
Keep the BN Magic Growing
  • It only takes 1 person to spark the BN magic into action
  • You make a huge difference every time you post and comment - Lead the way and other people will join in
  • Invite your friends, coworkers, and neighbors to join you by tapping the "Invite a friend" button on your Community page
  • Keep sharing Give, Ask & Gratitude posts
  • Visit buynothingproject.org/build for more ideas and support

Pick a Recipient
  • In Buy Nothing, Givers are always, always in charge of their giving.
  • When you post a Give, you can choose anyone as the recipient, for any reason
  • There is NO first come, first served rule in Buy Nothing!
  • We encourage everyone to experiment with ways to choose recipients, to include as many people as possible in the joy of receiving gifts
  • You can pick a name from a hat, use an online random number generator, give to a friend, give to a stranger, give however and to whomever you choose
  • If you're in a rush to give something away, add the words "Flash Give" to your post description
  • If you can wait to choose a recipient, you'll give more people a chance to see your Give and express their interest. To do this, add the word "Simmering" to your post description.
  • Sustaining Members can also add graphic "Simmer" and "Flash Give" labels to their posts (see the Sustaining Member cards below)
Contact Your Gift Recipient
  • When you've selected a recipient for your Give, tap on the 3 gray dots to the right of their comment under your post
  • Tap "Give the Gift to (person's name)"
  • Type your message to your recipient then tap "Yes" underneath "Gift to this person" - This will automatically change your Give's status to "Pending Pickup"
  • Tap the green "Send Private Message" button at the bottom of your screen
  • Enter your gift pick-up location and any special instructions. Save this information if you’d like it to auto-populate for your future
  • When you give things away this way, the person you give to will be able to open up a map with directions to the pick-up location
  • When the Gift is picked up, change your post's status to "Gifted". To do this, go to your "Me" page, tap on "Posts," then toggle your gift's status to "Gifted"
Share Your Address Via Private Message
We make it easy to share your address in a private message!

  • Open the Private Message screen
  • Click on the gray “Share My Address” icon to the left of the “Write something” box. This icon looks like a map pin next to a house. In the photo attached to this post, the icon is circled in red and has a red arrow pointing to it.
  • Type your address into the “address” box and add any special information in the “Pickup here” box
  • When you share your address this way, it opens up for the recipient of your message with a map and automatically-generated directions to your location
Input Your Pickup Location Once
You only have to input your pickup location once. Here's how:

• When you're on the Pickup Info screen when you're gifting a gift to someone, the screen asks for your Pickup Location.
• This is where you input your home address or the address where you may want to meet the recipient to give your gift. Type in the address.
• A map with a pin will appear for you to verify you've put in the right address.
• Below the map, type in your Pickup Instructions, i.e. any details about where you'll leave the gift.
• Tap on the box that says "Save this for next time" for the app to save your Pickup Instructions for future Gives!
Edit Your Post
You can change the text and photos of your GIVE, ASK, and GRATITUDE posts after you’ve shared them.

From your Home page feed:
  • Find your posts and tap the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the post box, then select “Edit Post.”

From your Me page:
  • Open your “Posts” tab in the upper taskbar.
  • Click on the edit icon on the right side of the post you’d like to change. This icon looks like a pencil pointing down onto a piece of blank paper.
Update Your Post Status
Once your GIVES have been given and your ASKS fulfilled, you can quickly update your post status!
  • Go to your “Me” page
  • Click on your “Posts” tab
  • Click on the “Gift,” “Ask,” or “Gratitude” box
  • Select the status that matches the situation

Doing this helps in a couple of ways:
  • Your post will be moved out of “Active” status, so you won’t receive comments or messages asking for your gift, or offering to fulfill you ask anymore.
  • Your completed GIVES and ASKS will be counted in the Community Activity shown on your Community page. You and your neighbors can see how much of a positive impact you’re having this way.
Private Messages
  • Tap on a neighbor's profile photo anywhere in the app to head to their profile page, where you’ll find a “Private Message” button you can click
  • If someone has commented on one of your posts, you can tap on the three dots to the right side of any of their comment, then tap on “Send a private message”

Please only send direct private messages to people you already know or who have asked you to private message them. Unsolicited messages to people you don’t know yet might be reported as spam.

Explore Your Me Page
Your "Me" page is your personal console for checking on the status of your posts and your activity.
  • Find the gray gear icon in the upper right corner. Tapping this will take you to your Settings page.
  • Your upper left taskbar item is "Posts". Here, you can filter your posts by "Active" or "All"
  • You can edit each post by tapping on the edit icon to the left of each post.
  • You can view the post by tapping on the image
  • You can change your post status by tapping on the colored bar at the bottom of the post.
  • Your "Activity" screen is enabled by tapping on "Activity". Here you can read through all of the recent comments to your posts and messages to your inbox.
  • Tap on "Profile" at the upper right side of the upper taskbar and you've accessed your Profile page which you can edit anytime by tapping "edit profile"
Find Your Settings
  • Tap "Me" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap on the grey gear in the upper right corner of your "Me" page
  • Scroll down to see and adjust all of your Settings
  • Tap the X in the upper right corner to exit your settings screen
Get to Know Your Neighbors
Some of your neighbors have icons on their profiles. Here's what they mean:

  • Sustaining Members help keep Buy Nothing going thanks to their monthly contributions! Sustaining Members get to use some additional features we release throughout the year. You can learn more and become a Sustaining Member via your Settings page.
  • Community Builders are here to answer questions and help build your local sharing platform. You can become a Community Builder, too - Visit buynothingproject.org/build to learn more. Community Builders have a blue gear icon.
  • Supporters have contributed to the Buy Nothing Project to help sustain our worldwide platform. You can become a Supporter too! Supporters have an orange heart icon.
Invite Your Friends
  • Tap on "Community" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap on the green "Invite a friend" button
  • Send an invitation message to your friend via the various options available (email, text, etc.)
Share Posts
You can share any post anywhere you'd like, to show your friends, family, followers, and others some BuyNothing goodness:
• Tap the 3 gray dots in the upper right corner of the post
• Tap "share post" and select your preferred sharing option
Make your posts unsharable
You can ensure that no one shares your posts without your permission.
• Tap "Me" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
• Tap "Profile"
• Tap "edit profile"
• Scroll down to tap the box next to "do not allow other people to share links to your posts outside of BuyNothing"
Track Your Impact
Track your impact by visiting your Community page often
  • Tap "Community" in the lower task bar
  • Watch the numbers of members grow each week, and when you've offered a Give, Ask, or Gratitude, you'll see it counted in your community metrics the next day
Read the Fine Print
Our Community Commitment and Guidelines underscore all the actions you take here at Buy Nothing.
  • Tap on the "Me" tab at the bottom of the screen
  • Tap on the gear (settings) icon in the top right corner
  • Tap on Community Commitment. Once you've read the Commitment, you'll find a link to the Community Guidelines, too.
Report a Post or Profile
We are a gift economy and we rely on the reports from participants to tell us if a post is noncompliant or a user breaking our foundational guidelines. Thank you to all for helping to the Buy Nothing culture thriving.
  • To report a post or profile, simply tap on the 3 dots in the upper right corner of the post and tap on "Report Post"
  • To report a user, go to their profile page, tap on the 3 dots in the upper right corner, and then tap on "Report User"

Change & Save Your Location - For Sustaining Members
If you're a Sustaining Member, changing your location is easy. The app will save up to 5 locations for you, so you can easily toggle between your different sharing communities, like work, home, and where you vacation.
• From your Home screen, tap the dropdown menu at the top of the screen
• Tap "Change to new location"
• Enter your new address or name of city/town and confirm that it is correct, then tap the green 'Confirm' button at the bottom of the screen
• Type in your new neighborhood name and tap the green 'Confirm' button at the bottom of the screen
• Refresh your feed by swiping down on the 'Home' screen

Bookmark Posts - Sustaining Members
Bookmarking posts is currently a feature for Sustaining Members. To bookmark a post to keep track of it, simply click on the bookmark icon below the post. You can then filter posts by Active, All, and Bookmarked.
Mark Post Status - Sustaining Members
BuyNothing has a special culture - We do not have a "first come, first served" rule or expectation.
  • Sometimes you just need an item gone quickly, and you'd like people to know you're gifting it as a "Flash Give" that needs to be picked up ASAP.
  • Other times, you're able to let your Give post "Simmer," allowing your neighbors more time to see your post and comment if they'd like to be considered as a recipient.
  • Sustaining Members can make the distinction about their posts, marking them as "Flash Gives" or "Let it Simmer." This is a simple toggle available to Sustaining Members when you post a Give, and it adds an eye-catching graphic to your Gives, making it easier for your neighbors to see this aspect of your offer.

Clear Your Inbox Notification Number
Want that red number over your Inbox to go away?

  • Visit your Inbox and open each conversation thread that’s highlighted in green.
  • Once you’ve scrolled through all of the messages that you’ve received, the red number notification will do away.
First, check to make sure you have push notifications turned on:
  • Tap "Me" in the taskbar across the bottom of your screen
  • Tap the gray gear icon in the upper right corner of your Me page to open your Settings page
  • When your Settings page opens, you should see "Notifications" near the top of the page, with "Push" below that and a teal/green toggle button
  • If the "Push" toggle button is not teal/green, tap it. This will turn your notifications on.
  • Tap the "Push" toggle button one more time to open your phone or tablet's notifications settings, where you should be able to adjust things such as whether you'd like a sound played when you get a notification, whether you want a bubble notification over the app icon on your phone/tablet screen, etc.
  • What you see will depend on your device and operating system.
Once your notifications are on, you should receive notifications whenever someone sends you a private message and whenever someone comments directly to you on one of your posts. You won't currently receive a notification if someone replies to another person's comment on one of your posts.

Having Trouble Adding Pictures to Your Posts?
This usually has to do with your phone settings:

Try this on an iPhone or iPad:
  • Open the BuyNothing app
  • Open your device's Settings
  • Open Privacy
  • Open Photos
  • Find BuyNothing in the list and make sure it's set to "All Photos"

Try this on an Android phone or tablet:
  • Open your device's Settings
  • Open Privacy
  • Open Permission Manager
  • Open Camera
  • Scroll to find BuyNothing
  • Tap BuyNothing if it's listed under "Not Allowed" to toggle to either "Allow only while using the app" or "ask every time"
