Civil discourse does not mean censored content. All Buy Nothing groups are adult-only, so use of curse words, naughty humor, risque content, or other subjects or styles of speaking/writing that may ruffle feathers is allowed.
The following is the code of conduct that we follow:
— We will not tolerate threats, harassment, or hate speech in our groups. The Buy Nothing Project defines hate speech as words or images that demean or dehumanize another person or group of people on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other similar ground.
— Buy Nothing groups are not discussion forums for political, social or religious debate. If a member repeatedly uses the platform to promote their own agenda, not related to local gift economies, the admins reserve the right to remove the member, the member’s comments, or posts.
— Our code of conduct does not rule out disagreement or discussion of potentially divisive topics that may come up around giving, receiving, sharing gifts, or participating in the Buy Nothing Project. Conversations that might make people feel uncomfortable, frustrated, or angry are allowed. We do ask that everyone express their reactions and emotions in words that do not dehumanize, threaten, or make use of hate speech.
— If you see something in the group that upsets you – pause. Do not immediately respond. Instead, step away and take time to think if there is a response that would contribute to civil discourse. For example, is the response you want to type true? Is it helpful? Kind? Necessary? Please remember you do not always have to comment if someone makes you uncomfortable. We welcome members reporting inappropriate statements or content to local admins or via our Member Feedback Form.
Volunteer admins for each of the Buy Nothing Project groups monitor user-generated content and reserve the right to remove content, without consent or notice, for any breach in Buy Nothing Project rules, Facebook’s Terms of Service, and any breach in our general code of civil conduct.
